Kaulquappe: I've tested the K3772 with smstools now for long time: It does not work for long-term use. It works a day and then stops working. I don't know if smstools or the K3772 is the reason for this.

When I remove my USB modem I get this error messages:

The problem is: When I reconnect the USB modem the error messages keep showing up, they do not go away. smsd does not realize that the interface is available again.
The interface (/dev/ttyGSM0) does not change because it gets automatically symlinked by udev, so that does not cause the issue:
/etc/udev/rules.d/20-gsm0.rules

Kaulquappe: Currently I use the K3772. I'm not sure if it is stable for long-term use but so far both receiving and sending of SMS work.
