marafa: hello keke thank you so much for all your help i am sorry to say i do not understand what a PDU is nor how i can configure it to accept phone numbers with 010.. format thanks
marafa: oh and i need to speed up processing of the messages
marafa: i dont want to recieve however out of the 3 numbers 002010.. works 2010.. works 010.. does NOT work i need to have it accept and send in the last format coz all the numbers here (and applications - there are apparently 3 different applications) use the last format

marafa: hi keke thanks for your very fast response i do not want to use international format as my application doesnt have the mobile numbers recorded in international format. yes i got CMS 500 errors i will put the SMSC number in pre_init - was taken from another forum post here for one of my earlier problems. i will remove it and try again the sim works. it has been with me for years. i previously (about 2 years ago) used the vodafone's betavine software to send sms from it. my conf after changes: devices = GSM1 logfile = /var/log/smsd/smsd.log loglevel = 7 user = smstools smart_logging = yes pidfile = /var/run/smsd/smsd.pid national_prefixes = 0 [GSM1] device = /dev/ttyUSB0 init = ATZ voicecall_hangup_ath = yes hangup_incoming_call = yes voicecall_ignore_modem_response = yes incoming = no outgoing = yes smsc = 0020105996500 cs_convert = yes decode_unicode_text = yes my log when i tried to send the sms: 2010-06-19 14:21:53,5, GSM1: Waiting 10 sec. before retrying 2010-06-19 14:22:03,6, GSM1: Checking if modem is ready 2010-06-19 14:22:03,7, GSM1: -> AT 2010-06-19 14:22:03,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:03,7, GSM1: <- AT OK 2010-06-19 14:22:03,6, GSM1: Pre-initializing modem 2010-06-19 14:22:03,7, GSM1: -> ATE0+CMEE=1 2010-06-19 14:22:03,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: <- ATE0+CMEE=1 OK 2010-06-19 14:22:04,6, GSM1: Initializing modem 2010-06-19 14:22:04,6, GSM1: Initializing modem 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: -> ATZ 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: <- OK 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: -> AT+CSQ 2010-06-19 14:22:04,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: <- AT+CSQ +CSQ: 10,99 OK 2010-06-19 14:22:05,6, GSM1: Checking if Modem is registered to the network 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: -> AT+CREG? 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: <- AT+CREG? +CREG: 0,1 OK 2010-06-19 14:22:05,6, GSM1: Modem is registered to the network 2010-06-19 14:22:05,6, GSM1: Selecting PDU mode 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: -> AT+CMGF=0 2010-06-19 14:22:05,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:06,7, GSM1: <- AT+CMGF=0 OK 2010-06-19 14:22:06,6, GSM1: Changing SMSC 2010-06-19 14:22:06,7, GSM1: -> AT+CSCA="+0020105996500" 2010-06-19 14:22:06,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:06,7, GSM1: <- AT+CSCA="+0020105996500" OK 2010-06-19 14:22:07,7, GSM1: -> AT+CMGS=29 2010-06-19 14:22:07,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:07,7, GSM1: <- AT+CMGS=29 > 2010-06-19 14:22:07,7, GSM1: -> 0011000A9110105300020000FF12B0182C36ABC1603218882E4F87D9201A▒ 2010-06-19 14:22:07,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 14:22:33,7, GSM1: <- 0011000A9110105300020000FF12B0182C36ABC1603218882E4F87D9201A +CMS ERROR: 500 (Unknown error) 2010-06-19 14:22:33,3, GSM1: The modem answer was not OK: 0011000A9110105300020000FF12B0182C36ABC1603218882E4F87D9201A+CMS ERROR: 500 (Unknown error) 2010-06-19 14:22:33,4, GSM1: Sending SMS to <mobile_number> failed 2010-06-19 14:22:33,6, GSM1: Deleted file /var/spool/sms/checked/send_LHYRSg 2010-06-19 14:22:33,2, GSM1: Fatal error: sending failed 3 times. marafa: keke first of all i would like to thank you for your patience. seriously next, i think i should explain what i want to do with smstools. i have set up a monitoring tool (zenoss) to send out sms alerts. however, the software we use is extremely old on old hardware and would like to very much migrate it from proprietary to open source software. the program will not receive any sms plus all sms sent will only be to local numbers anyways, i did as you said and put the national_prefixes = 0 in the global section. i restarted smsd. i sent 3 sms the first with local number the second with full international number the third with the + sign as part of the international number no luck on any of the 3 trials i am adding the smsd.conf file after the changes: devices = GSM1 logfile = /var/log/smsd/smsd.log loglevel = 7 user = smstools smart_logging = yes pidfile = /var/run/smsd/smsd.pid national_prefixes = 0 [GSM1] device = /dev/ttyUSB0 incoming = no init = ATZ pre_init = no outgoing = yes voicecall_hangup_ath = yes hangup_incoming_call = yes voicecall_ignore_modem_response = yes cs_convert = yes decode_unicode_text = yes internal_combine = yes
marafa: yes and yes :D i had mode-old and at the same time i was sending single digits (test numbers) :) but it still doesnt pass the block character problem. my log: 2010-06-19 11:13:55,6, GSM1: Selecting PDU mode 2010-06-19 11:13:55,7, GSM1: -> AT+CMGF=0 2010-06-19 11:13:55,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:13:55,7, GSM1: <- AT+CMGF=0 OK 2010-06-19 11:13:55,7, GSM1: -> AT+CMGS=16 2010-06-19 11:13:55,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:13:56,7, GSM1: <- AT+CMGS=16 > 2010-06-19 11:13:56,7, GSM1: -> 0011000B910201310520F00000FF02B118▒ 2010-06-19 11:13:56,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:14:22,7, GSM1: <- 0011000B910201310520F00000FF02B118 +CMS ERROR: 500 (Unknown error) 2010-06-19 11:14:22,3, GSM1: The modem answer was not OK: 0011000B910201310520F00000FF02B118+CMS ERROR: 500 (Unknown error) 2010-06-19 11:14:22,3, GSM1: The modem answer was not OK: 0011000B910201310520F00000FF02B118+CMS ERROR: 500 (Unknown error) 2010-06-19 11:14:22,5, GSM1: Waiting 10 sec. before retrying 2010-06-19 11:14:22,5, GSM1: Waiting 10 sec. before retrying 2010-06-19 11:14:32,6, GSM1: Checking if modem is ready 2010-06-19 11:14:32,7, GSM1: -> AT 2010-06-19 11:14:32,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:14:32,7, GSM1: <- AT OK 2010-06-19 11:14:32,6, GSM1: Initializing modem 2010-06-19 11:14:32,7, GSM1: -> ATZ 2010-06-19 11:14:32,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:14:33,7, GSM1: <- ATZ OK 2010-06-19 11:14:33,7, GSM1: -> AT+CSQ 2010-06-19 11:14:33,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2010-06-19 11:14:33,7, GSM1: <- AT+CSQ +CSQ: 8,99 OK 2010-06-19 11:14:33,6, GSM1: Checking if Modem is registered to the network 2010-06-19 11:14:33,7, GSM1: -> AT+CREG?
