Sending SMS will cost the same as it costs when you place the SIM into your handset and send SMS. The cost depends on your contract with GSM provider.

If you installed this software from Ubuntu repository, it's almost ready for use. The startup command is /etc/init.d/smstools start.

If you installed this from sources, the startup command is /etc/init.d/sms3 start.

You need to change the device setting. If you want to receive messages, you need to define incoming = yes in the modem section.

After you have smstools3 up and running, you can place your message file into the /var/spool/sms/outgoing directory. See this page for more details.

Plug it in, wait about ten seconds, and then use dmesg command to see what is the port used by your modem. If there are more than one port listed, try them all, starting from the last port.

For example:
usb 4-2.3: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

In this case the setting is device = /dev/ttyUSB0.
