Your front-end application can fill the From: field, or if creating message using editor, there can be From: defined with a desired content. However, this content is only shown in the log and in the sent message file. It can be used for tracking purposes.
From field is not delivered to the receivers phone. It's not possible to send SMS which include senders name in the format that would be recognized by the receivers phone. Only the number of sender is sent and it cannot be changed. Receivers phone will show a name only if there is number and name already defined in the address book.

Hi keke
I'm recieve such SMS messages (usually advertising/commersial). It's possible to receive SMS-messages with text filled field "From", and this name can't be in a address book. Also I'm consult with service desk of my cellular operators (Russian: MTS and Beeline). They confirm that it's possible too. Yury

It is possible when a message is sent using direct connection to the short message service center, usually over IP network. This connection is often called as "large account" and it's expensive and interface varies between operators and countries. With this connection senders number can be set and it can also be alphabetic.
Smstools supports only connections over GSM network and in this data there is no such kind of field like From. Phone number of SIM card is fixed.
