In smstools version 3.1.6 there is a bug which causes this kind of a failure when running 64bit edition of Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel processor. Sorry, but you have to upgrade to 3.1.9 or later version.

That solved the problem. Had to manually install the latest version.

Running the standard config and everything working, but it seems that after coupel of hours the modem start to reject smstool, when I do a restart of the sms3 it start to work again.

Log messages:

09:43:21,7, GSM1: -> AT+CREG?
09:43:21,3, GSM1: write_to_modem: error 5: Input/output error
09:43:31,3, GSM1: Error: Unexpected answer from Modem after +CREG?, waiting 1 sec. before retrying

After restart:

09:45:03,7, GSM1: -> AT+CREG?
09:45:03,7, GSM1: Command is sent, waiting for the answer
09:45:03,7, GSM1: <- +CREG: 2,1,"03F4","BA41" OK
