When alphabet is not defined, smsd tries to use GSM character set and if some character cannot be converted to GSM, character is dropped.
If a header Alphabet: UTF is used, or a global setting alphabet = UTF is defined in smsd.conf, smsd tries to use GSM character set, but if there are any characters outside of it, whole message is converted to UCS-2. This setting should be good in your country.
