I'm wondering if SMS Server Tools 3 is compatible with sierra Wireless Airlink series ?
The hardware list on the site states that it's a bit outdated.
Yes, the list is old and outdated, as the page says. It is impossible and also futile to try to keep the list up to date, because all possible devices cannot be tested and listed.
See the top of compatibility page for requirements.

Which one would be useful for a small scale business ?
Sierra Wireless Airlink GL or the FXT ?
Those devices are meant to use in M2M solutions, especially for data connections. SMS messaging does not need any data connections, SMS command set is enough. I do not those exact devices, but it sounds like the FXT series is using the chipset from Wavecom. Usually those chipsets are good.
There is no major difference between small scale and larger business. All modems do the same and in large business more than one modems are used at the same time. Up to 64 modems are supported and running well with SMSTools3. In many cases traditional RS-232 interface is more reliable than USB. External and independent power supply is recommended for all modems, and also external antennas usually give better signal than built-in antennas.
