Operating system name and version: Windows 7 + CYGWIN Version of smsd: 3.1.12 Smsd installed from: sources Name and model of a modem / phone: Teltonika 3G USB modem UM5100 Interface: USB
sometimes it works fine, but when the log shows the below msg, right after activation, it will not receive any SMS. ... <- +CPMS: "ME",0,0,"ME",0,0,"SM",3,20 OK GSM1: Used memory is 0 of 0 ... Not sure how to fix this, I had rebooted the whole thing to no avail. thanks! RR

Do you use any init string? If not, init = AT+CPMS="SM","SM","SM" could help.

follow up: I rebooted the PC, run teltonika's modem utility (comes with the modem to send/receive msg), sent a sms to the modem, saw it on the UI, stopped/exited the teltonika sw and run cygwin/smstools3. Now it works. Any comments? thanks RR

It looks like Teltonika's software initialized the modem to use SM memory. The init string should help. Reset the modem and try it without running Teltonika's software first.

Keke, Teltonika's software is needed to create the virtual COM port. I run it and then quit. Is there any other way to create the com port? Thanks!

If Teltonika's drivers do not create the port without running the utility, you just have to run it...
Have you tried the init string? It still should work.

Keke, I am using the init string you recommended, so far so good, receiving/xmitting is perfect. I am just intrigued by this error msg, please let me know if it is expected:
Trying to get stored message 20 2011-08-05 23:11:54,7, GSM13: -> AT+CMGR=20 2011-08-05 23:11:54,7, GSM13: Command is sent, waiting for the answer 2011-08-05 23:11:55,7, GSM13: <- +CMS ERROR: 321 (Invalid memory index) 2011-08-05 23:11:55,6, GSM13: No SMS received (reading interrupted) 2011-08-05 23:12:05,6, GSM13: Checking device for incoming SMS
BTW, what to do about the com port that changes depending on the USB port you use? I created one modem section for each port, not sure there are more elegant solutions for this.
Thanks! RR

If you still have errors while trying to receive messages, try a modem setting memory_start = 0. If it does not help, show your current setup and piece of a log which shows how smsd is trying to read first messages.
For changes of COM port I do not have any good hints currently.
